- How to Practice Gratitude: Simple Ways to Feel More Present Every Day
I am sharing with you some scientifically proven ways to bring more gratitude into your life. Take time to practice gratitude everyday... Let’s start with what gratitude is and why we want more of it. Gratitude actually contains two parts: First, we affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits that we’ve received. The second part of gratitude is that we recognize the sources of this goodness is outside of ourselves... We acknowledge that other people, or even a higher power if you're of a spiritual mindset, gave us many gifts, big and small to help us achieve the goodness in our lives. Why do we want more of this? Gratitude feels GREAT and fosters hope for the future. Pause for a moment and allow yourself to go back to a time when you were really grateful for something or someone. How does it feel? It feels wonderful, doesn’t it? I describe it as feeling like a great, big welcoming hug! Who doesn’t want more of those? Gratitude builds connection. Taking the time to appreciate those people who are contributing to your life in a positive way helps to build trust and intimacy. You are more likely to build a deeper, more meaningful relationship with those around you. Gratitude helps you sleep better. It helps to reduce worrying, resulting in a better night’s sleep. Gratitude increases happiness and positive emotion. When you are seeking and celebrating the good things in your life, you feel less stress and anxiety, and more happiness!! Now that we're clear on what Gratitude is and why we want more of it, let’s talk about some ways to do it. Be grateful for the sisters that expand your circle and bring you joy! 1. Keep a Gratitude Journal - Setting aside time on a daily basis to recall moments of gratitude associated with ordinary events, your personal attributes, or valued people in your life, gives you the potential to create a life-long theme of gratefulness. If you're not a paper/pen type of journal person, you can create a digital journal using voice clips on your phone or do what I do which is to create a gratitude jar. This is very simple to do. Just find an empty jar and fill it with Post-It Notes of things you are grateful for! 2. Remember the Bad - To be grateful in your current state, it is helpful to remember the hard times that you once experienced. When you remember how difficult life used to be and how far you have come, you set up an explicit contrast in your mind, and this contrast is fertile ground for gratefulness. 3. Ask Yourself Three Questions - Utilize the meditation technique known as Naikan. Naikan is a Japanese word that means inside looking or introspection. This involves reflecting on three questions daily: “What have I received from?” “What have I given to?" "What troubles and difficulties have I caused?” For more information on this type of practice, you can message me or Google Naikan. 4. Learn Prayers of Gratitude - In many spiritual traditions, prayers of gratitude are considered to be the most powerful form of prayer. This is because, through these prayers, people recognize the ultimate source of all they are and all they will ever be. 5. Come to Your Senses - Through our senses—the ability to touch, see, smell, taste, and hear—we gain an appreciation of what it means to be human and of what an incredible miracle it is to be alive. Seen through the lens of gratitude, the human body is not only a miraculous construction, but also a gift. 6. Use Visual Reminders - Because the two primary obstacles to gratefulness are forgetfulness and a lack of mindful awareness, visual reminders can serve as cues to trigger thoughts of gratitude. Oftentimes, the best visual reminders are other people. 7. Make a Vow to Practice Gratitude - Research shows that making an oath to perform a behavior increases the likelihood that the action will be executed. Therefore, write your own gratitude vow, which could be as simple as “I vow to count my blessings each day,” and post it somewhere where you will be reminded of it every day. 8. Watch your Language - Grateful people have a particular linguistic style that uses the language of gifts, givers, blessings, blessed, fortune, fortunate, and abundance. In gratitude, you should not focus on how inherently good you are, but rather on the inherently good things that others have done on your behalf. 9. Go Through the Motions - If you go through grateful motions, the emotion of gratitude should be triggered. Grateful motions include smiling, saying thank you, and writing letters of gratitude. 10. Think Outside the Box - If you want to make the most out of opportunities to flex your gratitude muscles, you must creatively look for new situations and circumstances in which to feel grateful. - How You Start Your Day Matters
I absolutely LOVE my morning routine. I do it nearly every morning, even on those days when I don’t have an early rise time. I share this with you, not because I feel like my routine is better than others, but as a celebration!! I was NEVER a morning person. I would reluctantly roll out of bed, hitting the snooze button until I was forced to get up, or be late for work. On those days when hitting the snooze button wasn’t an option, I’d navigate my morning, sipping multiple cups of coffee, and scrolling through my phone to see what the rest of the world was doing. I'd feel stressed, anxious, distracted, grumpy, rushed… BLAH! Not the recipe for a kick-ass day for sure. What Changed? I stopped asking myself what I wanted to “do” and started asking myself how I wanted to “feel” instead. I had a long history of following other people’s recommendations for a “good” morning routine. Things I thought I “should” do. Things like cross fit, affirmations, reading, journaling, etc... While all these things are great, whenever anything arrived that made doing that routine even a little bit challenging (a cloudy day, too much wine the night before, a hangnail), I would retreat to the warmth of my bed, never to be seen at 6am Pilates class again. I started by making a list of how I wanted to feel : energized, happy, peaceful, calm, connected, excited (or at least hopeful), and strong. I also made a list of what I didn’t want to do (or feel) in the morning: critical of myself, skip breakfast, feel rushed, make excuses. I started with small changes, things I knew I could do for sure. For example, I started drinking my morning coffee out of a cool mug. Usually something funny, but also inspiring. Something that made me smile when I saw it. I also switched my lotions and shampoo. I purchased products that were good for the environment, in scents that I adored. I gave myself permission to explore morning workouts based solely on how they made me feel. No frequency, distance, or level of difficulty required. If I did them for 10 minutes and I felt like that was enough. I celebrated myself, reminding myself how it made me feel (“I feel strong, I feel energized”) and checked the box for the day. Self-care is an expression of love. It's time to pause from your busy life without guilt or shame. Taking a break from your family, work, and daily commitments is not selfish... it's SELFUL. Self-care is about giving your mind, body, and soul time to reset, recharge and renew so you can manage the inevitable challenges of life from a place of purpose instead of burnout. Let’s clear up one common misconception… Self-care is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish. The reason I say that is because it took me years to grasp the difference. As I was growing up, I was never taught about self-care. I was never told it's okay to spend time doing things I liked. I was always busy making sure everyone else was happy and healthy...until the day I knew there was a better way. When we fill ourselves up, we can share and pour that love out to others. Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day. Self-care is part of the answer to how we can all better cope with daily stressors. It's the stress of trying to keep up with the pace of daily life, which technology has hastened more than ever. Where in history have we as humans been accessible to anyone 24/7? Thank you technology. I have several practices that I bring into my life for my self-care routine . I would say meditation is one of my self-care habits, along with journaling, and then some type of movement. That could be yoga, walking, or some form of exercise. The other self-care habit that I love to make part of my routine is spending time in nature. I know how healing being outside is for me… feeling close and connected to Mother Earth. Did you know that for approximately 99.9% of human history, human beings have evolved and lived in natural environments? Only recently have we started spending most of our time in urban and city areas. This has had an impact on our health and well-being. Researchers have explored the health benefits of nature and, particularly, the relationship between spending time in nature and mental health. Let me share a practice with you called forest bathing. This is something that I am trained in and share with clients/guests. It is a game changer. I have seen all types of people come to the practice, and when we complete our 60-75 minutes together...we are all feeling connected, grounded and at peace! Forest bathing, called Shinrin-yoku in Japanese, is a traditional practice created in 1982 by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It is a therapeutic technique in which you immerse yourself in nature while focusing on the experience through the five senses (i.e., vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch). Forest bathing is a type of nature therapy. Nature therapy can be done in various settings, such as in the mountains, at the beach, in a park, or any forest environment. Studies have shown that forest bathing has several mental health benefits, as well as improving your mood, your emotional well-being and yes…you guessed it, reduces cortisol levels. There are so many benefits for us when we engage with nature. Studies show the positive effects on humans can include: Decreasing hormones involved in the stress response (e.g., adrenaline, cortisol) Reduced inflammation in the body Enhancing the emotional state (e.g., attitude, feelings, psychological recovery) Improving cardiovascular markers (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate) Increasing antioxidant activity Increasing relaxation in the body and brain (e.g., alpha brain waves, beta brain waves) All these wonderful perks we experience just by connecting with nature! So, if you aren't clear now on your go-to self-care practice, spend some time thinking about it, and then create the space to do it! It will make you happy and in turn all those around you!
